Euro-Mediterranean Trends: Society and Culture, Politics and Economy
his course offers a comprehensive introduction to Euro-Mediterranean Studies by drawing on a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Among the major topics: conceptualizing Mediterranean and Euro-Mediterranean relations, multiculturalism in the Mediterranean, the Arab uprisings and conflicts as well as economic cooperation in the region.

Course aim
During the course, special attention will be given to the role of media, migration, civil society, energy, trade and development in the Mediterranean. Taking place in one of the region’s key cities, the course also includes field visits and allows students to participate in crisis simulations in order to discuss issues addressed in the course with civil society organizations, IOs, and politicians. Students will demonstrate what they have learned in final group presentations. Students will gain a critical understanding of major political, social, cultural, and economic developments in Euro-Mediterranean relations and assess current political and economic dynamics in Middle Eastern and Southern European countries from an interdisciplinary perspective.
