Hosted by the department of Criminal and Criminal Procedural Law, the 2021 edition of the annual Law on the Bosphorus International Summer School, will take place between 28 July 2021 and 8 August 2021, on a digital platform.
As with its previous 8th editions, the 2021 joint ‘Law on the Bosphorus’ Summer School will be oriented on transnational Human Rights Law, focusing within that domain on a particular theme.

The Istanbul Convention is the first convention in international law that has the power to sanction violence against women and domestic violence. With this Convention, it is aimed to protect women from "all kinds of" violence. Violence against women in the convention; is defined as any act of gender-based action or threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in the public or private sphere, which causes or may cause physical, sexual, psychological and economic pain or suffering to women and in this context it is defined as a violation of human rights and as a type of discrimination against women. Moreover, Convention is aimed to protect women and their family members from violence, to prosecute and prevent violence against women and their family members, and to create support policies for victims and perpetrators of violence. The Istanbul Convention also has imposed some obligations on the contracting parties in the aforementioned matters. The theme of our summer school this year has been determined as the Istanbul Convention and its obligations. The focus of the 2021 Summer School will be on Violence and Discrimination Against Women in the Context of the Istanbul Convention. Sub-themes will be on:

 Rights of Women
 International Human Rights Law
 Women Rights in International Law
 Violence and Discrimination against Women
 European Legal Standards of Criminal Justice Response to Violence Against Women
 Protection for Gender Violence Victims
 Domestic Violence
 Gender Equality and Gender Norms

The summer school will consist of daily lectures, mooting clinics and mooting sessions which will take place at the closing of the Summer School. The student presentation sessions will take place on the final day of the summer school.

The 2021 Summer School will be free of charge. Application is open to law students at bachelor, master and PhD level, with a preference for candidates who can demonstrate a strong basis in Human Rights Law.
