CardioLung: Updates in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Pathophysiology

when 20 June 2016 - 30 June 2016
duration 2 weeks
credits 7 ECTS
fee EUR 200

"CARDIOLUNG" stems from the established tradition of the three previous editions of the Summer School “Updates in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology” , featuring a new program and extended to include a “Pulmonary branch” focused on biological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Integrating Basic and Clinical Aspects by a Multidisciplinary Translational Approach
Cardiopulmonary health and disease strictly depend on a dynamic interplay between genes, ageing, lifestyle and risk factors. In multidisciplinary sessions, basically and clinically oriented lecturers from University of Pisa and other Italian and European academic and research Institutions will address relevant established and emerging topics by means of a bi-directional bench-bedside approach. The need for integration of knowledge finalized to better research and clinical outcome will be highlighted

Course format
Plenary lectures will represent the core of the Course. Hands-on-sessions and live demonstrations from diagnostic and pathophysiologic cardiovascular and pulmonary laboratories will provide an overview on various up-to-date techniques in the clinical research setting

The official language of the Summer School is English, and no knowledge of Italian is required.

Main topics 2016 (preliminary)
Genetic and ethnic factors in cardiovascular disease
Vascular and pulmonary ageing
Inflammation in cardiovascular and pulmonary disease
Cardiovascular and pulmonary system in extreme and critical conditions
Atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease
Diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease
Principles and methods for noninvasive hemodynamic investigation
Ventricular-arterial coupling: from physiology to the patient care

The Summer School "CardioLung 2016" will immedaitely follow the "4th International Summit on Ischemic Heart Disease: Reconciling Guidelines with scientific evidence” to be held in Pisa, 16-18 June 2016 (Director, Prof. Mario Marzilli), gathering together leading world academic cardiologists (preliminary program available at the SummerSchool website)

The interested Summer School students will be given the opportunity to attend also the "Summit on Ischemic Heart Disease", upon request

Course aim

To provide state-of-the-art and cutting-edge developments in knowledge and clinical approach to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Participants will become familiar with different research approaches to pathophysiology and disease, and will be able to integrate and critically evaluate research reported in literature and its translation to the clinical field

Credits info

7 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) will be acknowledged to the participants, after passing a final written test at the end of the Course.
A detailed preliminary program will be available by january 31st, and the final program with local and external faculty will be published by april 15th, 2016 .
