Gender, Conflict and Law

when 4 July 2016 - 22 July 2016
language English
duration 3 weeks
credits 7.5 ECTS
fee GBP 1450

This course provides students with an introduction to the gendered contours of armed conflict, looking at the different understandings of conflict (from local to the international) to understand how women are often rendered invisible as actors. Through looking at specific approaches to making women visible as actors in a range of conflicts in Asia, Africa and the Middle East students are encouraged to question assumptions about how gender operates in periods of armed conflict, to see the gendered structures of militaries and military behaviour, and of peace making endeavours, to be consistently gendered and yet experienced differently across global settings. Students will learn to use gender as a tool for analysis and to critically engage within institutional initiatives on women, peace and security.

As part of the course, students will watch a film screening of 'The Whistleblower' after which students will develop a broader discussion around the risks of international feminist organisations and UN initiatives on gender and women’s issues.
