This course introduces participants to major public health challenges in lower- and middle-income countries. It provides an introduction to the aetiology, epidemiology, risk factors and public health importance of selected chronic non-communicable diseases and addresses the intersection between communicable and non-communicable disease. Policy initiatives for international prevention and control of disease will introduced and major health threats and challenges such as the impact of globalization and environmental changes will be considered.

Target group

Health professionals/postgraduate students with an interest in global health, specifically in the fields of medicine, biomedical sciences, life sciences, social sciences or developmental studies.

The course is also aimed at health professionals working in or with low- or middle-income countries, biomedical and social science researchers, health personnel in government and non-government institutions, members of international agencies, and consultants.

A basic understanding of epidemiological and global health concepts is a prerequisite for successful course completion.
