Teacher Competences for Inclusive Education
Dealing with special needs in the classroom is a challenge for every teacher.
How do you think about including children with special needs and what are the main international approaches? How do you manage a group of children with all kind of different needs? Which competences do you need as a teacher?
All these questions will be discussed in this course.
Every education system has to deal with the question what to do with children with special educational needs (SEN) in the classroom and in the school. This course offers you an introduction in the theory and practice of inclusive education. The main question is : “What competences do teachers need to be competent inclusive teachers?” You will develop your inclusive attitude, values and practices as a teacher by expert meetings, workgroups, schoolvisits etc.. You will discover and discuss different ways to organize education for all, based on different views on learning and on the development of children. This course is very interesting for teacher training students as well as for starting professionals.
Inclusive education is the entitlement of all children and young people to quality education irrespective of their differences, dispositions or disabilities and is about embracing educational values of equity, diversity and social justice. The succesfull implementation of any inclusive policy in education is largely dependent on the willingness of teachers to support inclusive education.
In the Netherlands, children with special educational needs are increasingly being educated in mainstream school environments. Some teachers find it difficult to deal with the changing classroom population.
Students will be introduced to the inclusion policy in the education system in the Netherlands and compare it with the situation in other countries. The course provides a historical perspective on this topic and focus on students’ own personal teaching practices related to inclusive education. A field trip to an inclusive and an exclusive school is included in the programme. In expert meetings and workgroups, activities are organized around the main question: What competences do teachers need to be competent inclusive teachers?
