This course equips professionals with the knowledge and skills to advance social inclusion through a human rights framework. Through a combination of classroom hours and site visits, participants will gain an understanding of the manifestations of social exclusion within their own communities and how international human rights norms, standards and principles provide a framework for advancing inclusion. The course will prepare them to better create, implement, monitor and evaluate inclusive programmes and projects.

Participants will explore the underlying causes and impacts of social exclusion within their own communities and develop an understanding of how international human rights norms, standards and principles provide a framework for combating social exclusion. Together, they will learn about opportunities for advancing inclusion across society. The final days of the course will be dedicated to developing the practical skills that are necessary to combat social exclusion. Participants will learn how to advance inclusion through programme and project implementation and review and will delve into monitoring and evaluation for inclusive programming.

Target group

Policymakers (national, municipal), social workers, staff of national human rights institutions, people working to advance children’s rights and gender equality/women’s rights, development practitioners, and humanitarian workers.

Course aim

Participants who complete the course will have a deep understanding of how exclusion impacts individuals, groups and societies and how it manifests itself in the lack of (equal) access to various rights, opportunities and resources. They will also have learned about the standards, policies, processes and practices that can be used to ensure the inclusion of groups that are systematically disadvantaged.

The course will prepare participants to better create, implement, monitor and evaluate inclusive programmes and projects.
