Do you want to make a meaningful difference in your world? Work on ‘Wicked Problems’ in a Group of Young people from all over the World? Join The Hague Summer School in The Hague and learn how. The Hague Summer School is a cutting edge 2- or 4-week modular course running from July 2016 and looks at solving global issues through connecting the public and private sectors. Last summer we focussed on ‘Peace’ and coming summer the umbrella theme will be ‘Water’. Join us and explore society's future in the United Nations City of Peace, Justice and Security with its 131 international institutions, 80 justice organisations, 300 international businesses and numerous NGOs - the perfect place to see various sectors at work.

This module introduces the importance of water as a vital asset for people - as a human right, an economic imperative for businesses and a sustainability condition for nature. We focus on the role of the business sector in building peace and stability through responsible and fair water management for all, thus preventing and addressing conflicts caused by water shortages.

Lack of water or limited accessibility might exacerbate or even lead to conflicts, unless there is cooperation between the parties involved.

Water is also an essential resource for businesses, especially in the agriculture and food, textiles and mining industries and its accessibility is imperative, especially when sharing resources with the rest of society. Therefore, agreements among stakeholders on water use and its allocation are essential.

We will address the following important questions:

• How can the limited accessibility and availability of water affect conflict?
• How is conflict affecting availability and accessibility to water?
• What are the challenges related to water in war torn societies?
• How do such challenges affect businesses and society?
• What can the business sector do to address water related challenges?

This module is interactive with guest lecturers from businesses, civil and governmental sectors and related field visits.

The module is developed in collaboration with UPEACE and their Water and Peace programme.

Next to this module you will also follow the general module: Global Trends
