A Focus On A Small Space Called Weimar

The course »IN PUBLIC - street photography« is dedicated to the subject of street photography.

Which iconic artists are there?
In several keynotes you will get to know important street photographers, for example Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, Weegee, Robert Doisneau, Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz, Martin Parr, etc.. We analyze the technology they used, their visual language and the function of the series. Based on that newly gained knowledge you have the possibility to test these strategies yourself within small tasks.

By which strategies can you detect the "photographical moment"?
Is there a photographic moment like described by Henri Cartier-Bresson? The goal of various tasks is to develop a feeling for the right moment and the right technique.

How authentic can legal street photography be?
Currently it is illegal in Germany to photograph people without explicit usage rights! Therefore we look at the legal situation of street photography and how it might be influencing artistic expression.

In our plenary meetings we further try to find the right words for expressing the image analysis. We will analyze our images and will learn how to understand the process of taking pictures. What is a series? What is a sequence? How does images work? We go on a photographic search and explore various social and historical areas of Weimar.

The final results are presented in a self-organized exhibition. Each student will create an own final series, which can be taken home after the course.

The course is designed to image content strategies of street photography, it conveys no technical basis.
