Green Liver Systems: Eco-Friendly Water Purificationn: From Cognitive Modelling to Composite Design
Water pollution, eutrophication, water purification, biotransformation, aquatic macrophytes, risk assessment.
The course will include the following components:
• Classroom-based lectures
• Group work sub-projects
• Excursion to the Piano Lake
• Practical workshop
Students will gain insight into important environmental contaminants including micropollutants and natural toxins. The will learn how to use ecosystem services provided by aquatic macrophytes to clean up polluted water for different purposes (drinking water, spray irrigation water etc.)
Analytical methods such as LC-MSMS (massspectrometry) will also be shown and used.
Students will gain hands-on experience in building a model Green Liver System and will perform some basic experiments on water purification with this self-made model.
The excursion to Piano lake will show the students a urban water body and a small Green Liver-like system installed in this lake.
Commercial ideas will be developed and presented on how to use Green Liver Systems for water purification in future (e.g. Green Liver goes Space, Green Liver on Wheels).

The course is for all students interested in ecotoxicology and environmental engineering with the central topic water and water purification using ecofriendly methods.
Having taken this course, students will have learned skills in the following:
• Develop fundamental knowledge on water pollution, contaminants and chemical analysis
• Develop ideas for suitable eco-friendly systems to combat these water pollutants
• Hands-on experience on building a Green Liver System
• Enhance creative thinking and learning in a group
5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) for the academic course. 7 ECTS if booked along with the optional Start German: Language Course. 8 ECTS if booked along with the optional Managing Innovations and Creating Innovative Business Models course or the DesignBuild - Community Spaces with Refugees course.
EUR 1850: The fee includes: the Summer School academic program, transportation ticket and some extracurricular activities. Optional German language course not included (560 Euros).
