Intensive IELTS Programme
The Intensive IELTS Programme is designed to prepare students for the IELTS exam. This certification is often required for those planning to study or work abroad. Furthermore the IELTS programme also helps those not planning on taking the exam to improve their overall English language skills
Experience of working with under- and post- graduate students has shown that English language learners often do not have the vocabulary or language constructs to fully express and develop their ideas and opinions either on academic topics or in general English. Whilst this course does give guidance for the exam, it is also extremely useful for anyone who as a need to express themselves clearly and concisely. To facilitate this, students are also shown how to effectively find and learn the new vocabulary they need, as well as structures that can be used to demonstrate discourse and encourage conversation. Students are encouraged and supported to take responsibility for their own learning ensuring that each student can adapt the course material to their own requirements.
The course addresses the major skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition specific attention is given to the correct use of grammar and extending students’ vocabulary, in particular the precise use of grammar and lexis required for a variety of language production types; such as working with academic texts, presenting and defending an argument, and giving opinions on a topic. The exam focus of the course is on the IELTS Academic exam as this qualification is particularly useful (or sometimes required) for students who wish to continue a career in academia in English, and/or abroad.
As well as receiving feedback on their writing and speaking, students are also encouraged to take the opportunity to speak with the other non-native speakers in their class and use a variety of online material to further build their speaking and listening skills.
What is the IELTS test?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's leading test of academic English. IELTS is recognised by over 9000 organisations worldwide, including educational institutes, government agencies, professional bodies and employers. In addition, an IELTS score can be a key requirement in gaining a visa to work in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Candidates cannot fail the exam but are awarded an overall band score which reflects their abilities in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The overall band score is important for candidates who wish to emigrate, apply to university or find employment in an English-speaking country.
