language English
duration 2 weeks
credits 3 ECTS
fee EUR 1275

Students are introduced to the cultural traditions which have developed in the Netherlands from the Golden Age to the present day. Students will learn about distinctive periods in Dutch history, such as the productive ?Golden Age? of the 17th Century, when Dutch traditions such as cosmopolitanism and tolerance were born. Furthermore, students will focus on contemporary Dutch society and its characteristics, such as the welfare state, religious diversity, secularization, immigration, integration, permissiveness and the position of international law within the Netherlands.
One can only truly grasp a country' culture when having a basic understanding of the language spoken. Therefore, language training forms an important component of this course. We will focus on listening, reading, writing, and speaking and before you know it, you will be able to talk about daily life and place an order in a restaurant.
This is especially useful for students who are staying in the Netherlands for a longer period of time. The language training within this course is designed for beginners and will cover the basics. The course also includes a walking tour through the city of Utrecht, a full day excursion to The Hague and Amsterdam, and a movie night.
