ERTMS is the European Rail Traffic Management System which intends to remove the technical barriers against the interoperability regarding the train control and command system.

According to the European Railway Agency, there are more than twenty signalling and speed control systems operating at the same time in Europe. These technical barriers are hampering the development of rail transport at the European level. In order to address these incompatibilities Europe implemented a major industrial project ERTMS to create a unique signalling and communication standard throughout Europe.
The ERTMS concept encompasses ETCS (European Train Control Systems) and GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway). ETCS is a new control-command system. GSM-R serves as new radio system for voice and data communication and as wide range radio bearer for ETCS.

Since ERTMS is not only implemented in Europe in a rapidly changing pace, but also in many countries outside Europe, it is becoming more and more apparent that the railway industry is facing an increasing shortage of qualified railway engineers in the coming years. Many expert engineers approaching retirement and there is a considerable need for a new generation of younger people who also will bring welcome knowledge of new technologies and techniques.

Implementation of ERTMS comes to the construction of a system with a large ICT component in a complex physical and administrative environment with system-wide and interface issues. Cooperation with all railway industry partners is essential. So ERTMS is more than technique alone, the program has the necessary challenges on a wide variety of disciplines.

In this course the student will understand the technical basics of the system, the role it plays within the rail transport system, but also understand everything what is going on around the implementation of such a complex program in an international multidisciplinary technical environment. ?The reason why? plays a main role in the way we will discuss every topic.
Although the main focus is on ERTMS, the course will cover all the aspects of the rail transport system. Such as client needs, trains / rolling stock, infrastructure, track capacity and train safety in general.

With this the course is also open to students without a specific background or experience in the railway industry.
