Man, Machine and Media, the Internet of Things. A summer crash course of the Philosophy of New Media Technology
A crash course in the practice and philosophy of New Media Technology, issued by DMC (Digital Media & Communication)
The Internet of Things (IoT), is rapidly evolving and is believed to have an enormous impact on the way man organizes and behaves; the world is said to change dramatically.
In this one-week creative crash course students will participate, together with young professionals from a leading consultancy company in concepting a feasible design for a media-technology based IoT solution. You will receive a briefing on Monday morning and be able to deliver a conceptual solution on Friday afternoon.
During the course we will not only approach concepting and design from a practical perspective but also enhance the philosophical question of how man interacts with technology. We will dream up magnificent IoT services and also explore theoretical frames and ethics to interpret and comprehend these developments.
The desired outcome of this intensive one-week course is greater understanding of what IoT is really all about and how we (may) address it, besides creating concepts for great IoT applications.
You are a (pre) bachelor with a keen interest in new media and digital culture. You ask (philosophical) questions from a theoretical perspective but also want hands-on exercise. You are willing to work with students and young professionals in thinking up real solutions in the domain of digital media.
If we want to deploy new media technologies to our benefit, enriching human life, we must research their impact on our lives, learn how to design these technologies for the use of people and understand how to control them. This course strives to gain insight in the domain of the new media technologies and researches the future practicalities of their deployment. Ultimately, in this crash course of one week, you will understand the relevance and applicability and ethical considerations of the Internet of Things.
