The summer program in biotechnology promoted by the University of Cantabria: the REAL (for Research, Explore, And Learn) Summer Program, is centered around the academic and research areas of Santander's most prestigious research institute in biotechnology, to offer international undergraduate students the possibility of combining an exciting study abroad experience with hands-on research practice led by renowned research teams. The offer combines a high-quality academic agenda in Biotechnology with an optional program in Spanish Language and Culture including Spanish Grammar and Conversation classes, as well as classes on Spanish History, Spanish Art, and Gastronomy. In addition, the programs include several touristic visits and offer a series of optional excursions, giving the students the opportunity to explore Spain´s fascinating northern coast.
The Programs are structured in two parts. In the first four weeks, students will attend the biotechnology courses which program is attached. The second four weeks will be devoted to practical work embedded in research groups within the Research Institutes that foster each proposed program: in our case, the Institute for Biomedicine and Biotechnology (Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología de Cantabria, IBBTEC for the biotechnology program.
Teaching of the biotechnology courses is in English; no Spanish knowledge is required. The optional Spanish Program will be taught entirely in Spanish, but adapted to different levels, from absolute beginner to advance. Teaching methodology, far from conventional lectures, is student-based, encouraging students to explore by themselves, interact with professors, pose questions, and work in groups. Courses include a variety of site visits and cultural activities.

The Course aims to improve the knowlesge and skills in biotechnology of the attending students.

Fee info

USD 2000: In the first four weeks, students will attend the biotechnology courses which program can be found in the course webpage. Additional fee of 1,000 USD is charged if the student attend the optional program in Spanish Language and Culture including Spanish Grammar and Conversation classes, as well as classes on Spanish History, Spanish Art, and Gastronomy.
In addition, the program include several touristic visits and offer a series of optional excursions, giving the students the opportunity to explore Spain´s fascinating northern coast.
USD 2000: Fee 2 covers the second four weeks of the program that will be devoted to practical work embedded in research groups within the Research Institutes that foster each proposed program: in our case, the Institute for Biomedicine and Biotechnology (Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología de Cantabria, IBBTEC for the biotechnology program.
