This course explores the relationship between our human physiology and anatomy and several medical conditions. Students will build their awareness and understanding of how the body functions, looking at the cardiovascular, pulmonary, musculoskeletal and neuroendocrine systems. Health history, diagnostic procedures and current treatments of diseases will be discussed, as well as the management of medical emergencies.

The adaptation of body systems to different environments, such as temperature extremes, mountain altitudes, airplane cabins, hostile conditions of space will also be presented.

During the course students will be exposed to research that seeks to monitor and promote the medical and psychological wellbeing of humans, including the state-of-the-art innovations in telehealth and virtual and augmented realities.

Target group

The King's College London Pre-University Summer School is open to high-achieving students who are about to start or who are enrolled in their final two years of high school, and are typically aged 16 and 17. Students must be aged 16 as of 1 September 2022.

Course aim

By the end of the module, you should have:

experienced a variety of learning activities typical of first year undergraduate study
built relevant knowledge to support future study in the field of Biomedical and Life Sciences
carried out independent research on a given topic and produced a structured and well supported response to an assignment brief
worked collaboratively in diverse groups to produce a presentation

GBP : Our Pre-University Summer School is designed as residential experience, with students living in King’s College London accommodation throughout the course. Students on the residential programme can check into accommodation on the day prior to the start date (Sunday) and will check out on the final day (Friday).
