The course highlights the key challenges facing society when considering people’s health and well-being. Content includes discussion around; the changing demographics across the world, issues of long term conditions such as diabetes, dementia and obesity and other factors such as substance use and misuse. Key researchers in the field will share their expertise to allow students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the challenges, and the strategies that can be used to address them.

Key Activities:
Course delivery includes a combination of keynote lectures and student-led tutorials. Students will draw on experiences from their own perspective during tutorials. There will also be visits to external centres and projects relating to the topic area. Examples include the Anatomy Museum, Scottish Parliament and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The assessment for this course will consist of a 1000-word coursework, and a group presentation where the students will choose a topic from the course and present the implications and impact from a global perspective.

Social Programme:
As with all GCU International Summer School courses, participants will experience a comprehensive social programme consisting of various events and excursions, showcasing the best of Glasgow and Scotland as both study and tourist destinations.

Target group

This course is aimed at students up to and including Bachelors year three level, although other levels may also be considered.

High School leavers may be considered, subject to approval of academic record to date.

Credits info

5 ECTS credits - equivalent to 3 US credit hours.

Transfer of credit to students' home institutions should be negotiated in advance. GCU staff will be happy to liaise with applicants' home institutions as far as possible to assist with this.

Fee info

GBP 2450: The course fee includes tuition, private bedroom accommodation, airport pick-up and drop-off (Glasgow International Airport only), welcome pack and t-shirt, as well as all events and excursions included in the social programme.
