This course provides an introduction to social sciences and how they will be taught at university level. The course will cover subjects such as Politics, Sociology, Social Policy, and Economics, the course will use the theme of ‘Liberty’ (freedom) to explore how this topic appears in different disciplines across the area of Social Sciences. You will also have the chance to explore and stimulate your own interests in a range of topics, and to deepen your understanding of contemporary social issues. By reading the thinking across different disciplines, you will develop study skills that are both interdisciplinary and inter-textual.

Target group

High school students who are in their penultimate or final year of high school and planning to attend university to study the social sciences. The course could also appeal to high school students who are yet undecided regarding university study but would like a taster experience of studying at university level.

Course aim

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
-demonstrate an advanced interest in the Social Sciences
-have had opportunity to study the social sciences at a more advanced level
-understand and be able to use skills that are integral to studying Social Sciences including research skills and critical analysis
-show an advanced awareness of the social values and institutions that shape our world
