Big Data, Fast Computation

when 10 July 2017 - 14 July 2017
language English
duration 1 week
credits 3 ECTS
fee EUR 1000

During the first part students will learn statistical tools to get information from big data, such as regression, model selection, classification, resampling methods. Since application of these methods requires quite some computing time, we use the supercomputer of the University of Groningen, the Peregrine cluster. Instead of doing calculations on one desktop, you will be doing the calculations on a cluster of, say, ten computers simultaneously.

The second part of the summer school is devoted to applications: classification, networks, and visualisation. The days are scheduled as following: In the morning classes are conducted to acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge by experts in their fields whereas in the afternoon hands-on workshops allow students to work on problems.

Course aim

Everyone is talking about big data, but how big is big? Moreover, how would you analyse a truly big data set? In this summerschool we focus on a practical approach to handle big data.
