In our world many conflicts are going on and in general political and financial investments in violent strategies are much higher than investments in non-violent conflict resolution. Therefore the United Nations propagate the development of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. According to this concept long term (positive) peace extends the area of political and military strategy. It strives for a change of those mechanisms and evidences of cultures which legitimate the use of violence in conflict at every level of society. Peace and human rights education in families, in schools and in other educational settings is an important tool to develop and promote strategies and competencies which can contribute to cultures of peace.
The summer school ‘Peace and Human Rights Education’ builds on the ideas of an education for peace and human rights, as it is formulated by the UN Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). This year special emphasize will be placed on 1) Asian case study examples of peace and human rights education 2) the role of arts and creative educational approaches as a response to situations of injustice and violence.
You as a student, a teacher, a social worker, a politician, civil servant or parent, will explore this idea of Peace and Non-Violence with its basic characteristics of Human Rights and Social Justice. You will also get an understanding of the potential of peace and human rights education to contribute to such a culture of peace, both as a content and as a methodology. That is why this Summer school will offer a mix of academic theory (knowledge and reflection) and practical applications (decision making exercises and action). We want to challenge you to develop your own body of knowledge and opinions which can help you to determine your position in your own situation. For, although the decade of a culture of peace is has come to an end, the idea of a culture of peace and human rights is still relevant: for politics, for education and for action!
The program takes place in an international setting which will alternate with social time and visits.
Students earn 2 ECTS credits for participation, 1 additional ECTS credit can be earned by writing a paper.

The overall aim of the summer school is to offer an introduction and a contribution to education for peace and human rights. The case study examples of Asian projects and artistic approaches will offer insights in challenges faced when working on topics like peace and human rights.
