Academic English Toolkit
Language at university is more formal, more complex, and more objective than everyday language. Success in international higher education is based on the ability to read meaningfully and write effectively in academic English. This course is designed for advanced MA students, PhD students, and professional researchers and lecturers, who are already independent users of general English (level B2 or higher), but wish to further develop their confidence and skills in effective academic English reading and writing.
What will you learn in this course?
This course provides you with a practical toolkit to read and write proficiently in a higher education setting. The basis for writing a thesis project or a journal article is research, which involves reading and navigating long, complex texts as well as taking systematic notes during the process. As a next step, you critically discuss, summarise, and synthesise other writers’ theories to create your own convincing argument. In this course, we give you the tools to successfully master this academic writing process. You will be working with motivated international participants in a focused environment.
The Academic Toolkit includes the following:
PRE-WRITING STRATEGIES: free-writing, brainstorming, note-taking
FINE TUNING: thesis statements, research questions, nominalisation, hedging
TECHNIQUES: punctuation, grammar, vocabulary
PAPER STRUCTURE: introductions, conclusions, and writing abstracts
STYLE: academic style, coherence, clarity, objectivity
ARGUMENTATION: critical thinking, summarising, paraphrasing, paragraph construction, logic
The course methodology is a mix of hands-on work, input, lively discussion, and team-collaboration. All tasks given in class will be aimed at challenging you in an academic context.
International students, researchers and novice lecturers from any discipline wanting to build their Academic English and skills
WHAT WILL YOU BE ABLE TO DO BY THE END OF THE COURSE?
By the end of the course, you will be equipped with the fundamental academic toolkit required to structure and formulate meaningful academic writing. You will have raised your understanding of international academic practices and have honed your ability to function in an international higher education environment. The mastery of these skills will permit you to focus more fully and successfully on your future degree and other research projects. Thus it is the ideal preparation for your academic career abroad.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a course certificate (4,5 ECTS).
