This course will provide a solid knowledge about technical standards. This includes not only an overview of the process and governance of EU and international standardizations, but also a basic understanding of relevant EU Regulations, Directives and EC Communications. Moreover, in-depth analyses on some of the most important and topical legal issues around technical standards will follow. These sections include topics such as standard-essential patents, copyright protection of technical standards and data privacy standards. It takes into account the dynamics of technical standardization in the contemporary world. The main focus of the course is on the European legal and policy approach towards technical standardization, but international standardization will also be discussed.

Students are required to participate in case studies and working sessions in groups. Part of the program is a field trip, during which students will discuss with experts working in the field of standardization.

Target group

Students of all levels (BA/MA/PhD) of all fields are welcome to join the course. Applications must contain a CV and a motivation letter describing why an applicant would like to participate in the course. Both the CV and the letter form the basis for the selection of applicants.

Course aim

•Provide solid knowledge of the EU and international standardization landscape.
•Analyze the EU legislation related to standardization including the New Approach and the Regulation 1025/2012.
•Deepen knowledge on legal nature of technical standards and relation to other instruments (certification, codes of conduct).
•Critically assess contemporary issues (copyright, patent, competition, personal data protection …) relating to standardization activity in the EU.
•Identify uses of standardization as a tool for supporting Union legislation, policies and innovation.
•Unite standardization experts, academics and the industry.

Fee info

EUR 750: All admitted participants are expected to pay a course fee of €750. Early bird applications before 31st of March get a discount of 10%, TiU students (current/future/alumni) get a 15% discount.
