Creative Reuse in Architecture and Interior Design

online course
when 4 July 2022 - 7 July 2022
language English
duration 1 week
fee GBP 750

This live online short course will explore a series of key themes of reuse, including; rubbish theory, discard studies, degrowth, heritage, repair and maintenance, ruins, experimental preservation, and the circular economy.

We will examine the material, programmatic, economic and social implications of their implementation in relation to your own work in urbanism and planning, environmental architecture, architecture and/or interior design.

We will explore reuse from historic, economic, environmental and tectonic perspectives, complemented by examples of the application of creative reuse design strategies from leading practitioners in the global context, to provide participants with a broad and applied appreciation of the opportunities such strategies present.

In a time of climate breakdown, making the most of the resources available to us in inventive ways is an imperative strategy for the future of city design and urbanism, architectural and interior design. Yet such an approach can feel full of unknown risks and parameters, creating barriers to putting these into practice.

This short course will help reveal and confront these issues, developing and enriching your own creative practice through developing knowledge and new networks, to overcome such obstacles and enable you to employ these innovative practices in your own work.

The course is convened by Professor Graeme Brooker, Head of the Interior Design MA, and Dr Ruth Lang, alongside staff from the School of Architecture across the MA Architecture, MA Interior Design and PhD programmes.
