Contemporary Spain through the Eye of the Movie Camera

when 25 June 2024 - 12 July 2024
language Spanish
duration 3 weeks
credits 6 EC
fee EUR 910

The course offers an approach to Spanish history and culture from the post-war period to the present through its cinematic self-representation. The selection of films analyzed in the classes aims to be representative of the various periods of Spain's recent history and to cover the main political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the country's reality. In the same way, said selection tries to attend to the variety of Spanish cinema of the moment, integrating both auteur cinema and commercial or genre cinema.

Our methodological approach is based on the multidisciplinary perspective of the so-called comparative or intermediate studies that focus on visual culture. This type of approach allows a deeper and more integrated understanding of the contemporary world and is increasingly indispensable in the field of Humanities and Communication. Our main educational objective is to analyze, review and criticize the role that these cinematographic representations have had in the construction of the identity imaginary, contrasting them with the individual experience of foreign and national students, with the aim of giving a more inclusive, extensive and complex image of Spanish cultural diversity.

Course leader

Rosa Gutiérrez Herranz, professor at UAB of Art's and Cinema's History
Ludovico Longhi, doctor in Audiovisual Comunication and associate professor of History of Cinema and Conematographic direction.

Target group

Students who have a deep interest in cinema and would like to know more about Spanish Contemporary history.
A working knowledge of the language instruction is highly recommended.
