Together Apart - Sailing Europe

We offer time and space for an open exchange of ideas. The participants of the summer school, organized by the Hans and Marlene Farmont Foundation, are invited to spend time with young people from Europe on a ten-day sailing trip in Greece and Turkey. On the foundation’s sail boat, the fellows receive the opportunity to discuss current European topics, create a network and put companionship in a small space to the test. The foundation covers all costs related to the programme, such as food, accommodation and transportation.

Course leader

The panel discussions and the accompanying programme are run by our director of the Europe Programme, Milena Wichert.

Target group

Applications are open to anyone in training (academic or operational), as well as young professionals between the age of 18 and 25, whose main place of residency is Europe (all current and potential member states of the European Union). The Requirements are civic engagement, for example in the form of volunteer work, thorough knowledge of the English language and a commitment to sail with a team.
2023, the foundation is offering two sailing trips, which will take place in July (9. -18.7. and 23.7. - 1.8.2023). The application form can be found on our website, where applicants can indicate the trip of their choice. The main topic of discourse for 2023 will be “Together Apart”.

Required application documents:
- CV (english or german), please make sure to list civic engagement

- A short video in which you answer the question: “What does it mean to you to feel European? (3 minutes max) Be creative!
A suggestion for a keynote speech on the topic “Together Apart“. (These will be part of the accompanying programme and will be used as introductions for the panel discussions. The speeches should not be longer than 30 minutes and should serve as an impulse for a debate. Please explain in max. 500 words the topic you would like to discuss.

Course aim

Together with our crew, the five participants per trip gather sailing experiences and explore the Greek islands around Rhodes. Within the frame of assisted panels, the fellows are given the opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas. What does it mean to rely on each other, to set sail together and to carry responsibility for Europe?
