This basic course teaches the participants in 5 days how to start from a research question, conducting a qualitative research and progress to writing a scientific paper in qualitative research. This basic course provides hands-on tools for starting researchers to be able to start up, perform and finish a qualitative study independently and scientifically rigorous.

Experienced qualitative researchers of international repute will lead the course and share their experience in a variety of research projects. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences of research, including their questions, doubts and failures.

These are the lectures and workshops in brief:

•Qualitative inquiry: a different paradigm + exercises
•Setting up a qualitative research project + workshop
•Reflections on own research projects in private consultations (optional)
•Data-collection techniques (interviews, focus group discussions and observations) + workshops
•Analyzing qualitative data + workshop
•Appraising quality and reporting + workshop
•Qualitative data analysis using NVivo software

This year we invite an international speaker to talk about the role of qualitative methods in implementation science.

Target group

The summer school is open to early career researchers, PhD-students, Master students (max 5) and professionals in a field related to health care. Experience in qualitative research is not required.

Credits info

3 EC
Successful completion of the summer school can be awarded with 3 credits according the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Credits will be awarded on the base of preparatory readings, 100 % (active) participation during the course and the successful completion of an assignment. The student needs to be able to assess the quality of a qualitative research paper using the tools that were offered in the course. The completion of the task is only mandatory for participants who want to achieve the ECTS study credits.

To include the credits in the curriculum at the home institution, participants need an agreement with the responsible person at their university. A certificate of attendance will be awarded to all participants at the end of the prgramme. The certificate of completion replaces the certificate of attendance. All certificates of completion are issued as a micro-credential.

EUR 1000: Regular: €1000 (apply on or after 1 May 2024).
Master students: €640 (maximum 5 students)
