Discover British Costume Collections: Study Tour

A unique insight into historical British costume for professionals and students combining practical workshops, illustrated talks and study visits with exclusive access to some of the most significant costume and textile collections in the world.

Course aim
Taught by our expert university staff you will be guided through a range of different techniques and processes relevant to Costume and Performance Design through workshop sessions. Working in our dedicated Costume studios, you will explore costume construction and supervision along with fabric selection, dyeing and manipulation.
Emphasis will be placed upon developing design interpretation and conceptual thinking in order to successfully translate a character through to individual design.
Complimentary study visits to places such as Berrington Hall, The Globe Theatre and Angel Costumiers will add context to the practical workshops, with two overnight stays and a theatre performance also included. Illustrated talks by industry professionals will allow participants to further extend their knowledge and understanding of this fascinating subject.
You’ll leave the course with a deeper understanding of the aesthetics of costume and industry practice in order to develop further their creative and technical approaches to costume design and interpretation. The immersive study tours and illustrated talks will provide an important exploration of historical contexts and British Costume, as well as highlighting emerging developments in contemporary costume to inform their future work or studies.
