Montage, My Beautiful Trouble

when 17 August 2020 - 29 August 2020
language English
duration 2 weeks
fee EUR 720

The sources for moving image are endless – from archives, films, your own recorded images, home-movies, news, to YouTube videos, etc. Through the method of appropriation of footage previously made for another purpose (found footage) we can look deeply at images, explore and question them, and find individual expression through the technique of montage.

In this course, you will approach any given footage, from existing archives to your own filmed material, in order to develop a video project focusing on storytelling through montage.

The course will start with the introduction of your own material as well as of a selection of archives available for us to work with. There follow editing exercises in which, using the same material, each individual can manifest their own artistic expression through montage. We will
explore how editing can be used as a narration instrument, as a weapon, as a tool for critique, or to tell a particular story. Different audio-visual collage techniques as well as video-essay methods will be explored.

The aim of the course is to motivate participants to play freely with the different sources of material surrounding us and to develop their artistic projects. Individual as well as group consultations will be held throughout the course.
