Democracy vs Fake News: The dangers of Trumpism

It is known that the constitutional state and the organization of political power within it are based on rationalism; only from reason it is possible to organize power in a constitutional state and the relationship of this power with the citizens. But, what happens with Trumpism and populisms? They means totally the opposite: limitation of political power, absence of respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, elimination of the liberal character of the state, and its monopoly in favor of the leader’s private interests.

The absence of truthfulness and the construction of political movements based on irrational, unfounded theories or fake news leads to a society incapable of making free decisions and doomed to the loss of democracy. This course aims to (1) understand the importance of the defining elements of a constitutional model of organization of political power, (2) determine the configuration of political power in a constitutional state, and (3) finding out the mechanisms for demands of responsibility for the performance of public positions and functions in order to avoid and mitigate the results of the explosive combination of Trumpism, populism, fake news and lies.
