Regenerative Medicine is revolutionizing healthcare. This interdisciplinary field draws upon the body’s own healing processes in order to repair, restore or regenerate tissues and cells. It includes novel technologies and methods, designed to accelerate scientific discovery, and is a convening field for translational application.

Join our Summer School in Regenerative Medicine to learn, explore and contribute to this quickly evolving and diverse field. The Summer School runs from October 17-22, 2021, physically in Leiden, if permitted with respect to COVID-19. We have spots available for 25 highly motivated MSc and PhD students.

Target group

MSc and PhD students

Course aim

The aim of this Summer School is to teach you the current insights of basic developmental biology (including early development, pluripotent stem cell and iPSC biology, organ specification and development), and to illustrate how these can be used to develop regenerative therapies. The course will highlight three organ systems that are the focus of research at the LUMC: cardiovascular and muscle, the nervous system, and kidney.

During this 5-day program, you will gain a deep understanding of basic human development and how this is directly linked to the development of new regenerative therapies. The molecular, cellular, mechanical, biochemical, physical, structural processes that underlie the formation of specific cell types are often also reflected in disease development and progression.

In addition, we will also offer social and networking opportunities, so that you can get to know your peers and lecturers involved.

This Summer School will provide you with education and training on the following:

-The control of cell fate decisions during different stages of normal development
-The role of stem cells in different organ systems
-Stem cell-based in vitro models of tissue development, homeostasis and disease
-Reprogramming and directed differentiation technologies
-Novel genome editing technologies and their application to treat genetic disorders
-The translation of basic developmental insights into therapeutic opportunities
