Academic Courses in Theatre & Cultural Studies

when 24 June 2018 - 11 August 2018
language English
duration 7 weeks
fee GBP 3895

How do people of one culture represent people of different cultures? How do dramatists portray diversity of race and religion? How should the classic plays of the past be performed in the multicultural societies of today?

This course will examine changing attitudes to diversity from the time of Shakespeare down to current controversies in contemporary theatre. Case studies will be taken mainly from English and French theatre, as well as African and Caribbean theatre in these languages, in order to provide a variety of contexts in which to explore these issues. Texts will be studied in original languages or English translation, according to the needs of each student. Students will have the opportunity to engage in staged readings of relevant texts. They will be encouraged to discuss their own perspectives on diversity in the theatre.
