Recent advances in technology and emerging imaging modalities have revolutionized clinical diagnosis and treatment: structural imaging techniques can produce remarkably detailed anatomical images, whereas functional imaging procedures can register the evolution of events occurring at the cellular or molecular level. The course will introduce the physical principles underlying medical imaging, along with examples of specific medical applications.
Formation of Medical Images
Overview of mathematics and physics, Fourier and Radon transform, convolution, modulation, and transfer function.
X-Ray Imaging
Basic interactions of ionizing radiation. Scanning methods, area detectors. X-ray radiology, radiography, fluoroscopy.
Computed Tomography—CT
Principles of operation, instrumentation and technology, x-ray tubes, detector systems, image reconstruction techniques, image artifacts.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging—MRI
Principles of operation, relaxation times, magnetic field gradients, Fourier reconstruction, k-space coverage, slice selection, frequency and phase encoding, blood flow.
Functional Brain Imaging: MEG and MRI
Patterns of brain activation, brain functions, brain maps. Validation and reliability of maps.
The students will visit the University of Navarra Hospital and the Basque Center on Cognition Brain and Language (BCBL) Research Center here in San Sebastian which with we have excellent links. The course is open to engineering students without specific prerequisites and includes practical sessions in TECNUN Biomedical Engineering laboratories.
Guest Lecturer: George Zouridakis, Ph.D. Professor and Director Biomedical Imaging lab University of Houston
