About

SMILE is a Doctoral Network of the Marie SkΕ‚odowska-Curie Actions funded by Horizon Europe framework program of the European Union, to develop innovative solutions for geo-energy by training a new generation of young researchers for the successful deployment of subsurface low-carbon energy sources while protecting groundwater and related ecosystems. The SMILE acronym is inspired by the research methods involving a MultidiSciplinary and MultIscale approach for assessing coupLed processes induced by geo-Energies.

This course will do a SMILE project overview covering the following topics:

- introduction to ground-deformation monitoring;
- in-depth analysis of the fluid-rock interaction;
- principles and advanced aspects of the modelling of coupled processes;
- upscaling from lab and meso-scale to field scale;
- industrial and societal applications: geothermal energy, geologic carbon storage, nuclear waste disposal, underground energy storage, wastewater disposal and induced seismicity;
- exchange the results of the different research projects through poster sessions with plenty of time to discuss details between students and with the experienced professors and industrial partners that will attend the summer school.

The SMILE program aims at developing geo-energy solutions and understanding and predicting coupled processes, to be capable of proposing innovative solutions for the successful deployment of subsurface low-carbon energy sources while protecting groundwater and related ecosystems. To achieve this ambitious goal, the students will be exposed to interdisciplinary training on experimental, mathematical, and numerical modeling of coupled processes, upscaling techniques, and ground-deformation monitoring using field data from highly instrumented pilot tests and industrial sites. The training in SMILE has been designed by both academic and industrial partners to train competitive professionals and transferable skills to enhance their employability in academia, industry, and the public sector

Target group

Students or professionals interested in learning more about risk mitigation in geothermal energy and CO2 storage. This may concern professionals, Ph.D., Master, or Bachelor students from engineering, geology, and geophysics backgrounds
