Tree Rings, Climate, Natural Resources, and Human Interaction is an intensive, two-week international summer course centered on the science of dendrochronology—the study of tree rings—and its diverse applications in climate research, hydrology, archaeology, and natural resource management. The course is jointly organized by the Geographical Institute "Jovan Cvijić", Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA), Belgrade, Serbia, and the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR) at the University of Arizona, USA.
Combining lectures, fieldwork, and laboratory training, the course is led by internationally recognized experts from the University of Arizona. Participants will gain practical, hands-on experience in sampling techniques, crossdating, chronology building, and climate data analysis.
With a strong legacy of international collaboration, this program provides students and early-career researchers with a valuable opportunity to develop skills, deepen scientific knowledge, and connect with a global network in one of the most interdisciplinary fields of environmental science.
Dr. Ramzi Touchan Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, University of Arizona, USA An expert in dendroclimatology, forest ecology, and climate reconstruction with extensive field experience across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Central Asia and Dr. David Meko Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, University of Arizona, USA A leading specialist in hydroclimatic variability, drought reconstruction, and time series analysis using dendrochronological data.
The course is designed for:
Undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD students
Early-career researchers
Professionals and academics in dendrochronology, climate science, hydrology, archaeology, forestry, and natural resource management
Basic knowledge of statistics is recommended. Enthusiastic learners from all disciplines are welcome!
This two-week international summer course offers hands-on training in dendrochronology—the science of tree rings—and its applications in climate research, environmental studies, archaeology, and natural resource management. Participants will learn field techniques, lab methods, and data analysis from world-renowned experts, gaining practical skills to explore past climate and environmental change through tree-ring data.
